The Perfect Transition Piece

Hello my loyal readers! I hope you all are gearing up for a wonderful start to the new year this week with a little time off of work and out of school.  I know I am ready for a new start.  Today I want to talk about my favorite transitional piece that is great to wear in between seasons, but also during the colder months.  I call it a transitional piece because it is such an easy way to layer your clothing during the transition between seasons or from the outdoor to indoor temps. You can add it if you are cold and easily remove it when you get a little warmer.  We all know that we have those days that start out chilly in the mornings and then it warms up some during the day or those days that start out warm but then cool off in the evenings as the sun goes down.  This piece is great for those kinds of days.  What am I talking about? I am talking about the ever-awesome cardigan! That’s right, they are great for layering. Cardigans are also great because they allow you to add a little fun or color to your outfit.

Cardigans can come in all different shapes, sizes, and thickness. They can be short, mid length, or even down to your feet.  There are so many styles out there. Don’t be afraid to try different kinds.  Some cardigans have buttons and some don’t. Some are square shaped, some are rectangular shaped, and some are even circle shaped.  Some cardigans are more like ponchos and some are very basic. They come in many different colors and patterns too.  The possibilities really are endless.  I do recommend that everyone have 2 or 3 staple cardigans. I think everyone needs a good black cardigan, grey cardigan, and white or cream cardigan.  Those are 3 staples that you can add to just about any outfit.  Now, it is totally up to you what style or shape those three are, but those are 3 colors that will work with most anything. Then you can always add in some other colors and patterns to make things a little more fun.

Today I am going to show you a few examples of how you can style different cardigans.  Some of my cardigans are ones that I have had for years like my staple black, grey, and cream ones. Some of the ones I will show you are new and can still be purchased now if you want.  My goal is to show you different ways that you can dress them up or dress them down.  With the end of the year right now, there are tons of sales everywhere. Stores are trying to get rid of things to make room for new inventory. This is a good time to stock up on some of these trusty staples. Let’s get started.

1. The Staple Black Cardigan

This is probably my all time favorite cardigan. I have had it for several years and I wear it all the time with so many different things.  It can be dressed up or dressed down like I have shown you here. I cannot even tell you how much I love this cardigan and wish that I would have bought it in more colors way back when.

This black lace cardigan from Target is a great way to dress up an outfit. I love wearing this one buttoned up for a more classic look.

2. The Staple Grey Cardigan

This is another cardigan that I have had for years and wear a lot.  It is super soft and is so comfy to wear with so many things.

3. The Staple Cream Cardigan

I have also had this cardigan for a long time.  It is a waffle, textured fabric and so soft.  I love it not only because it goes with so many things, but also because it is a little longer so it is great to wear with leggings.

4. The Staple White Cardigan

This cardigan is fairly new to me but it is, sadly, no longer available. I wanted to show you a white cardigan and how you can pair it with a patterned shirt like this camo one.

5. The Solid Color Cardigan

Solid color cardigans are so good for adding color to other staple pieces like a chambray shirt or a white, black, or grey tee.  They can also be worn with patterned tops to pull out a specific color in the pattern or to tone down a bolder pattern.

Purple is one of my favorite colors and jewel tones are very popular this year.  This purple cardigan is such a great shade and I absolutely love it. I will say that I would order a size down as it is a bit oversized. I am wearing a small in this picture.

This brown cardigan has flecks of silver in it and is so pretty.  Brown is also a good staple cardigan because it can go with lots of things. This is a recent purchase from Target. It is no longer available online, but I believe that you can still find it in the store if interested. I would also size down on this one as well. I am wearing a small.

6. The Circle Cardigan

The circle Cardigan is one that is cut in the shape of a circle when it is laid completely flat. I have two cardigans like this and both are some of my favorites.  This one kind of gives you a poncho look.

7. The Patterned Cardigan

Patterned cardigans are so fun.  Aztec is super popular and I love this one from Target that I got several years ago. I have found a few similar options for you from Amazon and a cute alternative from Target in the same shape.

8. The Duster Cardigan

I think you all know my obsession with Lularoe by now and these Sarah Duster cardigans are some of my absolute favorite.  If you don’t know a Lularoe consultant, this is my favorite one.  If you aren’t a fan of Lularoe but like the look of a duster cardigan, I have found a few options for you.  The longer cardigans are great to pair with skinny jeans or leggings. You can see in the first outfit where I took a basic black tee and black leggings and added just a pop of contrast for a super cute and comfortable look.

As you can see, there are so many ways that you can wear cardigans.  The possibilities are endless with so many styles, shapes, colors, and patterns. You can also see that the staple cardigans that I have are ones that I have had for years and they are still in style and still make regular appearances in my wardrobe. I hope you find one or two (or more <wink>) that you love.
